Outdoor Rec Fest at the Taconic Outdoor Education Center located in Fahnestock State Park, Cold Spring NY - as usual did not
disappoint us. Our second year of participation in this fun filled day. The early activities were "Bird Banding" by Rich Guthrie. Rich netted and
banded songbirds. We were able to observe several popular birds up close and personal as Rich demonstrated banding and discussed
the individual birds' characteristics.
Some of the boys were returning from the "interpretive canoe paddle" when we joined up with them. They were guided by naturalists on a
one hour canoe trip on the pond.
The Troop then joined another naturalist for the "outdoor skills" session. A hands-on demonstration of varied outdoor skills. The boys were
challenged to build and demonstrate "firebuilding". They were quite successful at building and igniting the fire with only one match for a
change.
