Easter Break, Washington DC Touring Trip
Every three years the troop tries to visit our
Nation's Capital. Last trip was in 2000. A lot
of things have changed since then. This
year's trip was scheduled during the Easter
break because we were sleeping in tents at
the Quantico Marine Base. Gym type facilities
were not available so we had to pick a warm
weather month suitable for tents.
Wednesday 4/1- Typical end of Citizenship
month. The government themed jeopardy
contest. Patrol competition to see which
patrol is the most knowledgeable about our
history and government.
Monday 4/5 - A very early departure from
Elmhurst, 5:30 AM. The five hour drive goes
by quick and smoothly. First stop is the old
post office clock tower for a bird's eye view of
the city. The Museum of American history is
next, and finally the National Archive's. Then it
is on to Quantico for dinner and setting up
the campsite at the camp Lunga recreation
area.
Tuesday 4/6 - Cold night at the primitive
camp site. A quick nourishing breakfast at
the Marine base. Then it's on to DC. Could
not complete Library of Congress tour due to
scheduled appointment with Congressman
Crowley's staffers. Scouts toured the
Congressman's office and were escorted to
the US Capitol for a guided tour.
